“Medium Non-Loci”

This paper examines the feasibility of the medial virtual perception of artistic experience, without the onlooker’s physical presence (non-loci) or contact with an artefact or an art gallery space and context. Is the human cognitive and neural system ready for such a turn in perception? If the millions of years of socio-physiological ties to the environment are broken, can the artistic and educational messages be reconfigured consciously?

Are modern cultural institutions ready for the 2020s’ leap into non-physical presentations? How can we form and redesign artistic experience to further reinforce its social and educational impact? Converging on the topic from both practical and philosophical perspectives, we try to draw attention to the issues and provide essential outlines for the answers.

Comparing different stages of art development – in renaissance and 21st century, we try to point out major aspects of art progression in arts and its mutual influence on human visual communication. The question is: are there particular signs of importance in current visual mainstream smog? If yes, are these going to change in time? And do these signs compare to the universal signs based in esthetical theories of philosophers and scientist? How do these signs compare to the historical and geometrical rules of art? What were the achievements of renaissance masters in light of today art theory?

Cílem příspěvku je načrtnout a poukázat na možnosti chápání výtvarného umění, především fotografie, jako média pro transfer osobní smyslové zkušenosti. Tato funkce může být v dnešní době, která patří obrazům, internetu a přebytku vjemů, klíčová k posílení kvality komunikace a vzájemného porozumění. Snažíme o propojení několika celostních filosofických přístupů, umělců XX. a XXI: století a vlastní výtvarné práce. Doktorský výzkum má základy v pracích předchozích, ve kterých jsem se věnoval aplikaci a interpretaci teorií Viktora Šklovského, Johna Deweyho a Johna Bergera a také osobní umělecké tvorbě.

Práce sleduje konkrétní proměny v prezentaci a percepci širokého spektra obrazových médií a koherenci těchto změn s vybranými formami pojetí zkušenosti dle výkladu Miroslava Petříčka. Kritizujeme nadvládu neovládaných technologií a předkládáme uměleckou tvorbu jako významný znak lidskosti. Na příkladě práce Cy Twomblyho naznačujeme sebereflexe procesu výstavby uměleckého díla a prostupnost média jeho tvorby. Hledáme potenciální vliv a využití těchto poznatků v nové umělecké tvorbě.

Na příkladě práce Milana Maura naznačujeme aktuální stav syntézy smyslových vjemů a prostupnosti média jeho tvorby. Hledáme potenciální vliv a využití těchto poznatků v umělecké tvorbě.

Práce sleduje konkrétní aspekty vybraných forem nových médií a nejsoučasnějších uměleckých technologií, a jejich koherenci s pojetím Zkušenosti dle Johna Deweyho. Popisujeme propojení a funkci Corollary discharge s vnímáním obrazu v mozku, ve spojení s fenoménem akomodace oka prolomením interface. Analyzujeme aktuální stav VR a AR a potenciální jejich vliv na světovou výtvarnou tvorbu. Hledáme maxima a možnosti kontinuity lidského žití za pojmy Kyborg a za hranicemi nerozlišitelnosti virtuálního a reálného.

The thesis “Images of Experience” deals with aesthetic concept of visual perception as a sensual experience. We shall investigate the process of undergoing an experience on the part of both the artist and the spectator. We will seek out differences between the points of views of the artist, the perception of the general public and of established art theories. Furthermore, we shall analyse the influence of environments of perception and the effects of (neuro-)physical processes in the eye and brain. We aim to present solutions to the conflicts and limitations we encounter. The main references come from the writings of John Dewey, John Berger, Ladislav Kesner and Viktor Shklovsky. The results of the analysis shall be applied to our photographic work…
